Lesson Plans and Activities
You can't be an expert in every subject, so we've compiled a variety teaching plans and activities formulated by marine biology and science experts! We're sure you'll find something you like, and if you don't let us know and we can give you a hand.
kindergarten to year 6
Marine Protected Areas - Students will learn how valuable marine protected areas are in protecting different species

Coral Reef Ecosystems - Play a matching game with your students to explore the wonder of coral reef ecosystems focusing on biodiversity, the symbiotic relationships, and human impacts

Sorting the Gulf Ecosystem - Students will use look at photos from the Gulf of Mexico and categorise the organisms into plants, invertebrates, fish, birds, reptiles, mammals, or amphibians.

Paper Plate Fish - This activity mixes arts and crafts to explain the function of different fish features

Food Chain Hide and Seek - Get the kids up and moving with this predator prey themed hide and seek. Each student will act out a different fish, with the relevant predator aiming to find them.

Realms of the Arctic Ocean - Students will learn about the three different realms of the Arctic (pelagic, sea ice and benthic) and find out what organisms inhabit these areas.

Year 7 to Year 12
Marine Debris - Students will learn how trash accumulates in certain areas of the ocean, while investigating humans impact on this process.

Marine Migration - By using a interactive mapping tool and real data, students will compare the migration pattern of different species and discover how they are impacted by humans.

Food Webs - Students will research one marine organism each and attempt to create a food web based on their research of what their organism eats.

Marine Protected Areas Management - In a debate, students will discuss the pros and cons of a marine protected area. Students will then develop their own plan for managing a marine protected area.

Microbes and Climate - This activity will provide students with an understanding of the role microbes play in the climate, from climate change to current climate dynamics.

Hot, Cold, Fresh, Salty - Explore all the layers of the ocean with this activity. Students will discover not all ocean water is the same, and what causes these differences; temperature and salinity.
